This is the original copy of my article “An Integrated Approach to Playing the Saxophone” (Saxophone Symposium, Fall 1988), and was the first published article on subject. At the time, the accepted view was that jazz style was felt, but was not a technique that could be codified. The standard was classical style technique, which was regarded as universal. I argued that not only was Jazz style a technique but that all techniques were stylistically based. Therefore, Classical style technique did not necessarily apply to all music. Immature “jazz feel” was a technical deficiency.
